Munday Funday?!

Today dawned bright but not so early. Libby got 13 hours of sleep. We had breakfast of lumberjacks of our choice of all you can eat eggs and pancakes and other continental goodies.

Before officially staring out our day, a few of us decided to stroll down Larkin St. to the local Asian Foods store to get papples...What are papples you ask?! they are pear-apple hybrids. So delicious it's hard to fathom.

When Libby finally strolled down the stairs minutes before we had to leave we strolled down Ellis St. to our final destination of Glide Memorial Church to help serve lunch in their massively efficient dining hall.

We were greeted and given fashion aprons (plastic) hawt hairnets to keep Harry's greasy hairs out of the food. Hygiene is not his strong suit. We were then split into three groups: assembly line, prep-ers, and the cafe.

The atmosphere at Glide was an organized hectic feeling. This is to be expected when feeding 700+ people per meal-three times a day. It was interesting to see how people utilized this service in both good and bad ways.

We got to eat the same meal that we served. Today's menu: Mac and cheese with Julianne Ham, carrots, bread, oranges. The meal was...nutritious. After serving up hundreds of meals it was interesting to sit down and actually taste the food we were handing out.

We took a short break back at the hostel, some people took a nap, Libby FINALLY got some dayquil, much to the relief of the group. Luckily, the hostel is only 3 or 4 blocks away from the church, and today was a beautiful sunny and not overly windy day, so walking back and forth was a breeze!

We returned to Glide for our second shift, but first they gave us a quick orientation where a lady Shannon told us about Glide's history, mission, and core values. Then we all trooped downstairs to start our second shift of the day, dinner! Again, we broke into 3 groups but people shuffled around to experience different aspects of the Glide meal service.

During our time at Glide, we've run into some pretty neat characters. On the dinner assembly line we met a blunt and feisty guy named Rich. He had a lot of cool stories to tell but he was out to get Nancy's goat. Luckily she left it at home.

Other fun people we met: Rodrigo, the talker. Harriet, the grandmother. David, our cheerleader/former client of Glide. Ralph, the former Minnesotan. Joann, the you-don't-want-to-piss-me-off sister, who yelled at Harry a lot. Alex, Addie's future baby-daddy (or so he hopes) of course there were many more, but we have to move on along

We were in the need for sustenance for the rest of the week, so we headed over to our friendly neighborhood grocery to pick up... the whole store. A word to the wise, don't go shopping with 11 teenagers. It's a mess. And we get in the way. A LOT. With bags in hand, we started the walk home which was downhill, thankfully.

It was a long walk, so we started a game of 'I Spy' which lasted 3 seconds. So then we moved on to 'The Celebrity' game, where one person says.... "Thomas Jefferson" and the next person would have to say a J name, ex: Jack Nicholson. And on and on and on. We got to the E's and Lothy 1. didn't know how to spell Earhart. 2. kept saying E, E, E, that is an E, and at the same time a man strumming a ukulele walked by and stopped, and said "No, it's actually a G" Reply: "Thank you.... ANYWAYS..."

Anna and Ashley stopped into an Arab restaurant where Ashley was caught staring at some men speaking Arabic, of which she is a student. Then she realized that they were talking about her in Arabic, but still couldn't stop staring!

When we got back to the hostel, some of us youngins loitered in the lobby where things progressed from innocent chit chat, to intimate cuddling, to mass massaging (of our fearless leader) All this in front of 25 nationals, all of which were staring at us 'crazy Americans.' We were proud to represent our country, they will go home and talk about us.

We tried to stay up until the Q group got back, but we just couldn't do it, succumbing to the ever-present pull of sleep. The End. xoxo
